When Is It Time To Start Toilet Training?

October 20, 2020 2 min read

Many of us are staying indoors these days - potentially going a little stir crazy and a lot mentally exhausted if you’re being a mum, wife, teacher and principal all-in-one. Lots is happening in the world and the last thing you’re probably thinking about is taking your toddler to the next stage, toilet training. However, this could be the best time ever to introduce the toilet to your little one.

Toilet training is a milestone moment — not only for your toddler, but also for you. You might be entering into this new stage with a sense of relief mixed with a touch of sadness and maybe even a hint of confusion.

The most important thing about it is to wait until your child is ready. Your child needs to be both physically and emotionally ready to commit to this exciting new stage of life.

These are three signs that your child may be ready to ditch the nappies and use the toilet like a big kid:

Your Child is Staying Dry for 2 or More Hours at a Time

Your child needs to be physically ready to be toilet trained before you begin the process. One of the best ways to tell if your child has the muscle control needed is to monitor how long they are staying dry. If your child can stay dry for two to three hours at a time consistently, then they may be physically ready to begin potty training.

Your Child Can Tell You When They are Wet, Dry or Dirty

Oral communication skills are important when you are trying to toilet train. You will want to be sure that your child is capable of telling you when they have to go to the bathroom, or when they have had an accident. If your child informs you when their nappy is wet or dirty, then you can be confident that they will be able to communicate with you effectively during the toilet training process.

Your Child is Capable of Trying to Wipe and Clean Themselves

Your child should be coordinated enough to sit on the toilet, and also attempt to wipe themselves. It's important to remember that your child is not going to be able to wipe effectively at first, so you will always want to clean them yourself after their initial attempt. Flushable wipes can be more comfortable for your toddler, and will likely do a better job than toilet paper. Most toddlers find these wipes fun to use!

If your child is showing several of these signs, then it may be time to start the toilet training process. You can gather your supplies, such as a potty seat, toilet training books, flushable wipes and reward stickers, but also don't forget to pack your patience. This is new for both you and your child, and it takes time to figure out what works best for your family, so go easy on yourself during this process too! Good Luck out there!
