Help! My child hates having their nappy changed! Tips to assist here!

January 04, 2022 2 min read

If your baby hates having their nappy changed, trust me, you aren’t alone! We’ve put together some handy tips on how to help improve the nappy changing experience for both you and your baby.

  1. Have a designated nappy changing station

This keeps the changing situation and routine similar for both of you. You will begin to feel comfortable changing in that same place where you have access to everything you need and know where it all is.

  1. Keep everything near by

Before you begin your nappy change, make sure that you have everything you need to avoid having to scramble around the house to find that essential item mid change. To make everything a bit easier, it’s a good idea to have all your nappy changing equipment and essentials in one spot close to your changing station to create more of an effortless nappy change.

  1. Don’t turn your back on your baby

It is most likely that if your baby hates being changed, he/she is an avid wriggler. It is important to never turn your back on your baby when changing to avoid risk of he/she falling of the changing station.

  1. Keep them distracted

If your baby likes to wriggle or cry when changing, try to keep them distracted. You can use toys such as rattles or stuffed animals either hung up or give it to them to play with. You can also hang up a mobile phone or tablet (one that is out of reach of course) or put-up mirrors and pictures for your baby to look at and focus on.  High-contrast patterns and bright colours are easier for newborns to see and engage with.

  1. Talk and sing to your baby

Talking and singing to your baby is another way to keep them distracted but also makes them feel more relaxed. The tone of your voice will soothe your baby’s mind and he/she will become preoccupied and engaged in what you’re saying.

  1. Practice makes perfect

It is of course important to change your baby’s nappy frequently for hygiene reasons and to avoid nappy rash. Like anything, practice makes perfect. The more you get into a routine of changing, the easier it will become. You will get used to what works for you and your baby and ultimately what doesn’t!

Consider this a quick guide to help you navigate through the difficult world of nappy changing! Believe me when I say you aren’t the only person with questions, desperately google searching for the next best tip. Try these and see if it improves you and your baby’s nappy changing experience!
